Your Money, Your Safety: Lock Down Your Digital Life.

Cybersecurity Awareness Month is here. In just 5 simple steps, you can build a defense strong enough to protect your accounts, your finances, and your identity.

The 5-Step Digital Lock-Down Plan

Protecting your digital life doesn’t have to be complicated. Start with these five simple actions today.

  1. Step 1: Double-Lock Your Passwords

    • The Action: Create a unique, complex passphrase for every single account. Never reuse passwords!
    • The Must-Do: Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) on all sensitive accounts (email, banking, social media). It’s the strongest lock you have.
    • Tip: Use a reputable password manager to store and generate complex passwords securely.

Step 2: Stop, Look, and Delete Phishing Scams

    • The Action: Never click a link or download an attachment from an unexpected or suspicious email, text, or phone call.
    • The Rule: Your bank, IT department, or any legitimate company will never ask you for your password or PIN via email.
    • Tip: If something looks real but feels suspicious, contact the company directly through their official website or phone number—not the one provided in the email.

Step 3: Bank Safely, Every Time

    • The Action: Always look for the lock symbol and ‘https’ in your browser’s address bar before logging in to your financial accounts.
    • The Avoidance: Never conduct sensitive transactions (banking, shopping, logging in) while connected to public Wi-Fi (like at a coffee shop or airport).
    • Tip: Check your bank and credit card statements at least once a week to spot unauthorized charges immediately.

Step 4: Don’t Skip Software Updates

    • The Action: Regularly update your smartphone, computer operating system, and all your apps.
    • The Reason: These updates fix “security holes” that hackers love to exploit. An outdated app is an open door.
    • Tip: Go into your settings right now and turn on Automatic Updates for all your devices and core applications.

Step 5: Secure Your Physical Devices

    • The Action: Set a strong PIN, password, or biometric lock (fingerprint/face ID) on your phone, tablet, and laptop.
    • The Backup: If your device is lost or stolen, your lock is the only thing protecting your data. Take the time to enable remote wipe in case a device goes missing.
    • Tip: Never leave your laptop, phone, or tablet unattended in a public place—even if it’s locked.
